Storytelling is a wonderful tool to help parents and educators teach children concepts, values, and new behaviors. Stories are different than direct instruction or lecturing, because listeners feel safe from criticism and so do not become defensive about being directed, allowing them to learn from the experiences of the characters. They are effective because listeners see themselves in the stories' characters, which makes them better able to relate to the events and feelings that are being projected through the characters. This is particularly true for young children, as they have immense imaginations.
